Glacial collapse caused deadly Nepal-Tibet disaster, USGS says

A glacial collapse caused seismic activity and «catastrophic» downstream impacts in Nepal and Tibet, the US Geological Survey said on Thursday.

The agency said seismic activity initially reported as an earthquake «was instead a glacial collapse and debris flow» that «caused subsequent catastrophic impacts downstream.»

US promises $500,000 in aid after ‘devastating’ Nepal floods

The US government on Wednesday extended its condolences over the deadly floods in Nepal and pledged $500,000 in emergency assistance, the State Department said.

«The United States extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the devastating flash floods in the Rasuwa district of Nepal,» the agency said, adding that Washington was deploying a disaster response adviser to the region while pledging $500,000 to support rescue efforts.

34 Australians missing after Nepal-Tibet border floods

Thirty-four Australians are missing following flash flooding in the Nepal-Tibet border region, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Thursday.

«At this point Nepal is a developing country, it doesn’t have the resources that an event like that would have in Australia, so information is difficult,» he told a panel discussion.

«Our thoughts are with all those who will be concerned about their loved ones today.»

UN mobilises support for communities hit by deadly Nepal floods

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday that UN teams and partners were mobilising supplies and personnel in Nepal to support communities affected by a deadly flood.

Hundreds missing after flooding causes landslides in Nepal

A huge wall of mud and rock collapsed into a river on the Himalayan border of Nepal and China’s Tibet on Wednesday, triggering catastrophic flooding on the Nepali side that killed scores of people and left hundreds of tourists missing.

Initial reports from Nepali officials suggested an earthquake in the area could have caused the lower part of a glacier to collapse and trigger the floods.

As darkness fell, authorities continued the grim task of recovering and trying to identify bodies. Some 157 bodies had been recovered so far, Nepal police said late on Wednesday.

Officials at Nepal’s tourism ministry told media outlets that over 400 tourists are missing, of whom around 340 are foreigners.
